A defense official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently examining the potential security risks associated with Chinese cars, while staff have been instructed to avoid discussing secret information in all cars.
Security Guidance for MoD Staff
In a recent appearance on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed claims that Ministry of Defence officials have been told not to discuss secret material while travelling in Chinese vehicles.
The minister stated that the MoD is “looking into” cars from China within its fleets, but emphasised that safety is a issue in all modern cars.
We have a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a tiny fraction.
However regardless of if you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our people is not to plug Ministry of Defence devices into their car, to avoid having conversations at a classified classification in any kind of vehicle, because of the growing threats of surveillance that are present in all vehicle, to restrict those confidential conversations in protected areas. This is a wise and sensible thing for everyone worried about security.
After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using all cars from China, the minister replied: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”
Broader Security Background
The revelation follows claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese electric buses, which could enable China to switch off buses and cause chaos to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russia intelligence vessel has been shining lasers at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “extremely risky” act by government representatives.
This wider security situation highlights the importance of robust protocols and vigilance in all aspects of government operations, from transport usage to communication practices.
