No fewer than 13 people killed and 98 hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” declared the head of state.

The leader reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were built at an rapid pace, beating forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked significant concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party called for an urgent suspension in the development and management of all such projects.

This halt was suggested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."

In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these strategic initiatives.
