The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Each time a significant honors show nears, you'll find a demand to include fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything during that awards season
  • A different innovative game missed out in 2019
  • A beloved organization game got ignored recently
  • Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
