Roughly 50 automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Cars, building surfaces and postal boxes were marked, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they announced in a statement.
Officers report they were alerted during the night on Wednesday night, when a individual discovered that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish fluid.
The liquid had been applied in the pattern of a banned symbol, they added.
Police then found many other vandalized cars and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police state early analysis show the fluid was most likely human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no indication as to its source; investigators are presently not aware of any injuries in association with the event," they added.
Local authorities announced they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the public for information.
A high-ranking official said the incident left him stunned and needed to be resolved rapidly.
"This incident strikes at the core of Hanau and revives the pain of the far-right attack five years ago," he posted on social media, recalling the killing of nine individuals by a assailant targeting people of foreign heritage in 2020.
